Janet Tobiassen Crosby DVM never planned to be a writer. She wanted to be a veterinarian from the moment she learned such a job existed – sometime during the first grade, when she accompanied her mom to the vet with a sick cat.
Janet “adopted” all the neighborhood cats, and at age 11 she started training her first dog, a newly adopted rescue Collie. At age 12, she joined a dog obedience 4-H club and was active through high school as a member and as a junior leader.
Trained at Oregon State University, Washington State University, and the Animal Medical Center in New York City, Janet graduated with a doctorate in veterinary medicine (DVM) from Oregon State University in 1990.
After graduation, Janet joined a 12-doctor hospital in New Jersey, which provided a high caseload and loads of experience in a short period of time. She also practiced in Utah and finally made her way back to the west coast. Her special veterinary medicine interests include soft tissue surgery, adoption/rescue, and behavior.
In 1998, a friend encouraged Janet to become a “Guide” at an online venture called The Mining Company, where she was charged with creating links to exemplary content in the subject area of veterinary medicine. Time passed, and the Internet changed. The Mining Company took on a new identity as About.com, and instead of finding links to high-quality sites elsewhere, Janet found herself writing her own content, especially after The New York Times purchased About.com in 2005. At this point, Janet has written thousands of pages of content for her site (vetmedicine.about.com), and her blog and the community forums on her About.com site are popular destinations for readers who need answers to their pet care questions. Janet’s goal as a writer is to be a reliable and compassionate source of veterinary information for her readers.
Over the years, Janet has been invited to write the Foreward to several books and to review many veterinary and pet books. In 2009, she was quoted in a Chicago Tribune article on knowing when to say “goodbye” to a beloved pet.
Happily married and a mom to two great kids, Janet enjoys spending time with her dogs, cats, chickens and geese on their small farm in Washington. She also spends a lot of time at her vet classmate’s clinic, Southcare Animal Medical Center. Janet is passionate about Race for the Cure, pet adoption and glass beads. She finds time to make glass beads to benefit animals and Race for the Cure whenever possible.
