Biography

Allie has had a special connection with dogs since she was a kid, so it’s no surprise that she began writing about pets right after she became a full-time freelancer. Allie’s first best friend was her grandparents’ yellow Heinz 57, Noah, and even now her (human) friends joke that any stray in the neighborhood will find the way to her home. When that happens, she and her husband, Joe, always help the wayward dog or cat – or once, ferret – find its way back home or to a new forever home. They’d love to take in every creature that comes along, but they’ve already got a full house in Kansas City, Mo., with their own two rescued dogs – Maddie, a sweet Spaniel mix and Gobo, a feisty Australian Cattle Dog mix, as well as three mercurial cats, Mafalda, Haley and Jazz.

Allie began her professional writing career 15 years ago – she earned a degree in magazine journalism from Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, then worked for several years covering politics as a newspaper reporter in Texas. She moved on to work as a staff writer for an alternative weekly newspaper in Kansas City, where she wrote investigative feature stories and won several national journalism awards, including two Clarion Awards from the Association for Women in Communications and a James Beard Foundation journalism award. Five years ago, she went freelance and sold her first national magazine article to Healthy Pet. Since then, her writing about dogs has been published in The Bark, Best Friends and AKC Family Dog. Allie also writes regularly about trends and pet products for the industry magazine Pet Age. Her work also has appeared on Salon.com, CreditCards.com and in Popular Science.

Like just about everyone, Allie juggles work and a busy home life, so she’s always looking for great tips on how to better take care of – and enjoy life with – her beloved animal companions. She looks forward to sharing that passion – and exchanging ideas – with pet-loving readers.
