Shortages prove premium dog food here to stay
Months after the dog food contamination scare, sales of premium dog food continue to skyrocket. Sales are so good that suppliers can’t keep up with demand.
“There’s a premium right now on premium dog food,” said Anthony Holloway, president of K9 Cuisine, a top online seller of premium brands based in Paris, IL. “We have been without our top selling brand (Orijen, an Alberta, Canada based premium dog food company) for a month because they can’t keep up with all the orders.”
Previously, the Chicago Tribune reported that Evanger’s, a family based natural pet food company based in Wheeling, IL, a Chicago suburb, was having difficulty producing enough product to meet the public’s demand.
Holloway’s company has noticed sales increases of 50 percent every month this year. His online business is distinguished by his wide range of premium dog food offerings and his free delivery on orders of more than $50. The combination of quality and convenience is appealing to a wide range of customers across the country living in small towns, suburbs and urban neighborhooods.
Holloway said he believes the trend toward premium dog food will continue as owners have noticed the health benefits in their pets. “The combination of a safe product and a more vital dog is very attractive to owners.”
